One thing I noticed with my iPhone was that while you could assign custom ringtones to the people in your address book, there wasn't a "none" or silent option you could use so that the phone would ring for certain callers, but not for others.
I mean, everyone has someone that they don't want to talk to, right?
Then I figured out a way to do it. And as you may or may not have guessed from the price, it involves ringtones.
What I did was find a song in my music library I'd gotten from iTunes that was "ringtoneable", and that contained a quiet passage a few seconds long. (More typically found at the end of a song.)
The rest, as they say, is history. I bought that song as a ringtone, selected the quiet portion, and renamed it to "Silent". After resyncing my iPhone I could now assign my very special ringtone to a few very special people in my address book.
So now when my very special friends call, my phone doesn't ring, and after a few silent rings they go on to voicemail. None the wiser.
And that's how I added a new feature to my iPhone... for a buck.
BTW, if anyone from Apple's iPhone group happens to be reading this, "Silent" would still be a nice feature. As well as being able to select "Vibrate" as a ringtone.
Cute. Be nice to have this built-in and not have to spend money for it. Seems at times like Apple is trying to nickel-and-dime us to death. Remember the QuickTime "Pro" upgrade?
