Epson / HP Detail Printer Compatibility Under Leopard

Epson has posted a FAQ detailing the release schedule of full-featured Macintosh OS X 10.5 printer drivers for their Epson Stylus Pro printers.

These “full-featured” drivers allow professional photographers and graphic artists access to the 16-bit color printing subsystems built into Leopard, giving prints better color and tonal accuracy.

HP also recently confirmed that customers will not need to download or reinstall any additional printer software, as full support for nearly all of their printers is built directly into Leopard. New versions, if needed, will appear via Software Update.

Fundamentally, updated drivers for the Stylus Pro 3800, 4800, 7800, and 9800 series printers are coming in December, with drivers for the brand new 4880, 7880, 9880, and 11880 series printers coming in February ’08.

Epson will NOT be releasing updated drivers for their older professional printers like the 4000 or 7600. Drivers designed for OS X 10.4 will work under Leopard, but offer only limited printing support.

Check Epson’s Driver & Support page for updates.

Adobe also reminds us that several significant printing-related changes where made in the recent Photoshop 10.0.1 update. Read the following document (PDF) for details.
