Quick Tip: Assigning The Finder To A Specific Space

I've found that it's become helpful to assign Leopard's new Finder to a specific Space so that new Finder windows always appear together with their brethren.

However, while many people know how to assign an application to a given space using the Expose/Spaces pane in System Preferences, doing the same thing to the Finder is a bit of mystery, since it's nowhere to be found in the Applications folder.

To Do Trouble in Leopard-Land's iCal

How is it that Apple can come so close to perfection in developing new features for their software... and then turn around and for all intents and purposes render the same piece of software useless?

Today's culprit is the new To-Do feature added to Mail.app, in which they make it drop-dead simple simple to make any email you receive a To-Do item. Just select some text, click a button, and boom. You have a To-Do.

Add a date to it, and boom. It also appears on your iCal calendar. Sweet.

Only they forgot one little thing...

Google's GMail Hard on the Heels of .Mac

In related technology news, Google just announced new GMail features, including improved performance, a new contact manager, and better integration with their online applications.

This on the heels of enabling free IMAP for all GMail accounts, and providing IMAP support for the iPhone.

Photoshop CS3 Issues Under Leopard? [UPDATED]

Looks like Photoshop CS3 has issues with Leopard.

On my new 24" iMac, Photoshop runs, but many tools like the Marque selection tool and the Text tool simply don't work; the cursor flickering back and forth between the standard arrow cursor and the tool-specific one, with no "marching ants" selection nor any text entry.

Time Travel for Mere Mortals

Several questions have arisen about Time Machine backup disks. Apple and several other journalists have been quoted as saying that you're going to want to dedicate a drive to Time Machine, and not use it for anything else.

Is that right, or is there more to the story?

Actually... it's not, and there is.

No Resolution Independence in Leopard

When Leopard was introduced, one of the features people eagerly awaited was resolution independence. This would let Apple support much, much higher screen resolutions on their products, all without dropping font sizes down to something approaching six-point FlySpeck Condensed.

Unfortunately, this feature is nowhere to be found in the Leopard interface, nor is it listed in the now famous 300+ New Features page. What happened???

Restoring the "Classics"

Apple just announced that 10.5 (Leopard) will no longer support OS 9 "Classic" mode on any platform, PowerPC or Intel. That's too bad. Not because OS 9 was such a great OS (it wasn't), but because there are still some legacy programs out there that, to this day, people still use and that are no longer available.

One such is HyperCard.

Quick Tip: Eliminate the "Glass" Dock in Leopard

Some people, including myself, like the new "Glass" dock in OS X Leopard. Others can't stand the thing. If you belong to the later group, thank Michel Jansen, who discovered that it's now possible to change the dock's appearance with a well-typed system command.

Is Leopard's iChat a "Game Changer"? Part II

I've had several discussions over Is Leopard's iChat a "Game Changer"?, and the general consensus seems to be that while a great idea, it probably isn't practical. When I ask why, they point out that iChat is built around several major OS X technologies that don't exist under Windows.

But the thing is... they do.
